The US prison population has grown by 500 percent in 30 years. Many voices have called for an end to mass incarceration with its social and fiscal costs. People who are imprisoned inevitably face consequences beyond incarceration itself. Today, changes in drug sentencing laws, state budget crises, and other factors are leading lawmakers, jurists, and legal administrators to reconsider rehabilitation and other options within the criminal justice system in preference to prison. Panel members will explore the impact of state and local legislative wins supporting the restoration of livelihoods, housing, voting rights, and more not only on incarcerated men and women but on their families, as well.
